Module 5: Contemporary Realistic Fiction: Freedom’s A-Calling’ Me
Summary: This book explores the life of a slave man whose name is not said. One day the man decides he is tired of him and the other slaves getting whipped. So he decides to run away with a few slaves. The journey begins in Mississippi and goes all the way up to Michigan where there are some Caucasians assisting them. They are excited to finally be in free territory.
Activities: A classroom activity that could be used for these books would be to have the students to research their own information of how slaves escaped their owners back in that time period and create a presentation on an actual slave who was able to gain their freedom through escape.
