Module 5: Contemporary Realistic Fiction: Freedom’s A-Calling’ Me
Summary: This book explores the life of a slave man whose name is not said. One day the man decides he is tired of him and the other slaves getting whipped. So he decides to run away with a few slaves. The journey begins in Mississippi and goes all the way up to Michigan where there are some Caucasians assisting them. They are excited to finally be in free territory. Evaluation of Genre: This book hits all aspects of Historical fiction because it bases the story on events that happened In the past so the story could have been something that occurred. One example would be that slaves were captured and not killed so that they could return to work on the plantation they would have had escaped from. Activities: A classroom activity that could be used for these books would be to have the students to research their own information of how slaves escaped their owners back in that time period and create a presentation on an actual slave who was able to gain their freedom th...
